In the Clear

My love for anything lucite has been taken to the next level!  The rough edge of the rope handles in combination with the sleekness of the clear cube is PERFECTION!

Objects of my Affection

I've always loved little trinkets. You know, little things that have the all important duty to just sit there and look pretty. In design, I like to think of them as the bling, the jewelry, the sparkle. Here are some of my objects of affection!

Market Fresh

Summer is finally drawing to a close (well technically it is, I will disregard the fact that it's still 95 degrees here in Florida) and that means that it's time for harvest. Time to enjoy all the amazing produce that's in season! Here's some stylish ways to collect and display all your farmers market finds!

Irene's Drink Menu

With hurricane Irene on her way and most of the east coast on a watch, it looks like most of us will be laying low and staying in this weekend. With that said there is no reason to let her put a damper on our style. Try making one or all of these delicious cocktails and you'll not only enjoy the tastes of summer before it's over, but have the chic-est hurricane party in town!

Cantelope Martinis

How to:

Cut a cantelope into chunks. Put melon in blender with a little apple juice and about 2 tbsp of agave nectar (adjust to taste) and pureee until smooth. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add equal parts vodka and puree (about 2 oz of each), shake, and strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with fresh raspberries or melon wedge.

Strawberry Mojito

How To:

Cut lime into small wedges (8 to 12 peices per lime), slice stawberries in half or quarters, and remove mint from stems. In the small part of a cocktail shaker (or cocktail glass) add about half of a lime (4-6 peices), about 4 strawberry chunks, one packet of splenda, small bunch of mint leaves, and a splash of club soda. Muddle all ingredients to infuse flavors. Fill shaker with ice (on top of muddled ingredients) and add 1 and 1/2 oz of rum (I reccomend strawberry flavored Barcard Dragonberry but plain works too). Shake well, pour into glass, and top with more club soda. Garnish with lime or strawberry.

Note: These mojitos are also great with watermelon or other seasonal fruit!

Lychee Martini

How To:

Open can of lychees and set aside 6-8 lychees for garnish. Dump remaining contents including juice into blender and puree until smooth. Fill a shaker with ice and add equal parts lychee puree and vodka, about 2 oz of each (coconut rum is also good for a sweeter taste). Shake and strain into chilled martini glass and garnish with lychees.

Note: Lychees are available at most Asian markets if your grocery store doesn't have them.

Hope you enjoy these recipes and don't be afraid to get creative and try your own version with your favorite ingredients or liquor. You can also easily make any of these "mocktails" by omitting the liquor and adding club soda or sprite. There, take that Irene!

Sunday night comforts

Ever since I was young, I remember Sunday's as the day to relax, hang out, and just enjoy doing nothing. We usually would eat a big lunch after church so Sunday night dinner was simple and low key. Our go to was grilled cheese and tomato soup, a classic comfort that I still love to enjoy. Last night I amped up this duo with some homemade rustic touches, but I promise it's still simple enough to whip up without interfering with your lounge time.

Homemade chunky tomato soup

1 large can of diced tomato
1/2 cup onion chopped
1 carrot diced
1 celery stalk diced
2 garlic cloves chopped
1 1/2 cups cups chicken broth
1/2 cup cream
1 bay leaf
fresh basil chopped
olive oil
salt & fresh ground pepper

Heat oven to 400. Drain canned tomatoes with small strainer into a bowl reserving liquid. Spread out tomatoes on a foil lined baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and chopped basil. Roast in oven for about 15 minutes. (Once they're done roasting set aside 1/2 cup of tomatoes.) Meanwhile in a pot saute onion, carrots, and celery with olive oil until softened. Add garlic and saute for about 2 more minutes. Once that's done, add reserved liquid, chicken broth, all but 1/2 cup of tomatoes, and bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper then cover and simmer for about 30 mins. Remove bay leaf and cool soup for 10 mins before carefully transferring to blender. Puree until smooth then return soup to pot. Add reserved tomatoes and cream, stir, and heat until warm.  Spoon into bowls and top with fresh pepper.

Mini grilled cheeses with bacon

French bread sliced
Cheddar cheese sliced
Bacon
Butter

Cook bacon until crispy. Butter bread slices and assemble sandwiches with sliced cheese and bacon in the middle. Grill in pan until golden.

Pair with this and you've got a comfortable night in.

Singing in the Rain

This time of year in South Florida means rain almost every day. We get summer/fall showers rather than spring showers. It will go from a beautiful cloud-less sky to flash flooding in a blink of an eye! Hence my inspiration for these rainy day accessories, and because I know you're not going to let a little rain put a damper on "your style"!

Can we say full coverage! "Clear bubble" umbrella: Totes

Obsessed with these boots! Instant sophistication, and reminds me of something Kate Middleton would wear. "Hunter Regent Carlyle" boots: Zappos

Cute and easy to slip on and off.  "Smerkar" rain boots: Aldo

For a more bohemian look try something with natural wood and texture. "Veda" wood umbrella stand: World Market

Simple but totally functional! Rubber lattice door mat: Williams & Sonoma

This mat uses the water that drips from your umbrella to nourish seedlings underneath creating a living umbrella stand! "Green" umbrella stand: Green Trace

Doesn't this brighten your mood on a rainy day?" Mum" door mat: Chiasso

Just for funsies and because everyone can use a laugh. Imagine what the neighbors will say, lol? "Butter my biscuit" doormat: Target
